Screen frames for industrial screening machines: Choice of material and areas of application

Screen frames are essential components in industrial screening machines that are used across many industries to sort particles by size, remove contaminants and ensure the quality of products. The choice of material for screen frames depends on various factors, such as the type of material being screened, the operating conditions and the specific requirements of the respective industry. Depending on the area of application, different materials for screen frames are used. Bückmann offers screen frames made of materials such as steel, stainless steel, aluminium and wood. These screen frames are compatible with all common screening machines, regardless of whether it is a plan sifter, tumbler or vibrating screen.

Steel screen frames

Steel screen frames are robust and durable, which makes them suitable for demanding applications in heavy industry. They offer high strength and are resistant to mechanical stress and abrasion. Steel frames are often used in the mining and mineral industries, where they have to handle large quantities of heavy and abrasive materials. They are also used in the recycling industry as they can withstand harsh conditions and intensive use. However, one disadvantage of steel is its susceptibility to corrosion, which is why they often require protective coatings.

Stainless steel screen frames

Stainless steel screen frames combine the strength of steel with excellent corrosion resistance, making them a preferred choice for many demanding applications. They are ideal for the chemical industry, where corrosive chemicals are involved – and for the food and drinks industry, where hygienic conditions are a top priority. Stainless steel frames are also widely used in the medical and pharmaceutical industries, as they are easy to sterilize and resistant to various cleaning agents. Their durability and low maintenance requirements justify the higher purchase costs compared to other materials. Stainless steel screen frames are the most frequently ordered at Bückmann.

Aluminium screen frames

Aluminium screen frames are lightweight and corrosion-resistant, making them ideal for applications where weight is a factor and high corrosion resistance is required. These frames are often used in the food and pharmaceutical industries, where strict hygiene regulations apply and equipment must be cleaned regularly. Aluminium frames are also widely used in the plastics industry as they are easy to handle and assemble. Another advantage of aluminium is its good conductivity, which can be beneficial in certain electrostatic applications. Bückmann aluminium screen frames can also be supplied made of wrought aluminium alloys suitable for food contact, which meet the requirements of EN 602.

Wooden screen frames

Wooden screen frames are a traditional choice and are still used in certain industries and applications. They are inexpensive and easy to machine, making them an attractive option for certain uses. Wooden frames are particularly popular in the agricultural and construction industries, where coarse materials such as gravel, sand or agricultural products are screened. Despite their lower durability compared to metal frames, wooden frames can last a long time if properly maintained and stored in dry conditions.

Screen frames for other applications

Screen frames made by Bückmann are also used outside of screening machines. A common example is in air outlet elements for operating-room ceilings. Screen frames, often covered with a very fine screen fabric, are also used in wind tunnels or other flow applications.

In our screen fitting service, we cover screen frames made of all materials with the appropriate screen fabric made of stainless steel or plastic. Various adhesives are available for this, tailored to your requirements. We can also cover screen frames made of plastic.
